Germantown, Philadelphia, PA – May 15, 2017 – More than 200 Marian devotees gathered at the Miraculous Medal Shrine on Saturday, May 13, at 7pm, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima for a special presentation: “Fatima and the Miraculous Medal: Prayer as the Power for Peace.” Fr. Michael Callaghan, CM, gave the talk which explored the connection between the two apparitions – both delivering important messages to humanity, and their role in helping bring about peace.

As Fr. Callaghan reflected on the spiritual experience of preparing for his talk, he noted two words came to mind: spiritual enlightenment and peacemaking.

“Our Lady of Fatima calls us to a new age of spiritual enlightenment and peacemaking,” he said. “Her message is still very much needed today in the 21st century, just as it was in the 20th century. We receive the enlightenment of her apparition and the call to be peacemakers.

“People were filled with gratitude to the Blessed Mother and to the Central Association of the Miraculous Medal for providing the opportunity once again to hear the message of Fatima,” he said.

Fr. William O’Brien, CM, Miraculous Medal Shrine Director and CAMM Spiritual Director, was pleased the Shrine was able to host the event, giving devotees the occasion to grow in their devotion to Mary.

“The Shrine is a life-giving place of worship, an environment of peace, where visitors may deepen their devotion to Mary,” he said. “It was beautiful to see this deepening devotion here on Saturday night as devotees paid tribute to the apparitions of Our Lady Fatima and Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal.”

One attendee, Regina Fabrizio, attended the talk with 18 members of her family in honor of her 50th birthday.

“The talk ‘Fatima and the Miraculous Medal: Prayer as the Power for Peace’ by Fr. Michael Callaghan, CM, on the actual 100th anniversary of Our Lady’s apparitions, was a joy to be part of,” she exclaimed. “I am blessed to have been born on this feast day 50 years ago and have always enjoyed a real affinity to Our Lady. Attending this presentation on my birthday with my family really solidified my belief in Mary as a gateway to peace in this world. I’m so thankful that the Shrine presented this special event, and Fr. Callaghan’s message of peace through Our Lady was insightful and thought-provoking – with the perfect touch of humor.”

After the talk, attendees had the opportunity to fulfill one of the conditions for a plenary indulgence through prayers and veneration of a statue of Our Lady of Fatima. Pope Francis has granted a plenary indulgence opportunity for the 100th anniversary of the Fatima apparitions from November 27, 2016 to November 26, 2017.
